SMCA Celebrated Christmas & New Year

Kuwait, 4th January 2008: The Syro Malabar Cultural Association, Kuwait celebrated the Christmas and New Year as a mega event at the Al-Mazra Hawally on Friday 4th January 2008 at 5:30pm in presence of a large gathering. The evening started with the melodious Christmas Carol of SMCA choir. It was followed by hoisting of SMCA Flag by the President Mr. Jacob Cherian Marattukalam accompanied by the four Area General Conveners - Mr. Benny Perikilathu, Mr. Bijoy Palakunnel, Mr. Jeeves Erinjeril and Mr. Sunny Mannarkattu while the Baladeepthi chorus of 125 children was singing the SMCA anthem.

 

Later the celebration was inaugurated by the Vatican Nuncio H. E. Archbishop Paul El- Hachem by lighting the lamp and delivered the Christmas message. SMCA General Secretary Adv. Benny Nalpathamkalam and four Area secretaries – Mr. Jomon Edayadil, Mr.Martin Paul Kadavi, Mr.Prinson Ambooken, and Mr. Shaji Nagaroor jointly cut the Christmas cake.

During the function SMCA silver jubilee couples were honored. Monsignor Rev. Fr. John Kallarackal addressed the gathering and gave mementos to the Jubilarians. Cultural Committee Convener Mr.Binu Chacko – presented the first Volume of SMCA Bulletin-2008 to Rev. Fr.Joseph Edapulavan which was then released by Fr. Joseph Edapulavan by handing over it to the Treasurer Mr.Sebastian Punnakottil. Rev. Fr. Melvin, Administrator to Kuwait Vicariate and Mr. V. K. Mahajan, First Secretary to Indian Embassy-Kuwait delivered felicitations to the gathering.

Mementos were distributed to the Baladeepthi children who received the First Holy Communion in 2007. Baladeepthi President Miss. Dyna Roby spoke representing the children's wing of SMCA.

The public function was presided by SMCA President Mr. Jacob Cherian. Gen. Secretary Adv. Benny Nalpathamkalam welcomed the audience and Office Sec. Mr. Jinson Kolencherry proposed the vote of thanks. Trophies to the winners of annual arts competition 2007 were distributed by Rev. Fr. Thomas Vadakedathu, Asst. Vicar of St. Teresa’s Church- Salmiya and Mr. Titus, the Director of Bahrain Exchange Co.

The public meeting was followed by a cultural extravaganza staged by different areas. "Malakha Kunjungal", a skit based on the massacre of children by King Herod presented by Abbasiya area was well appreciated by all. Thereafter Santa Clause came and distributed chocolates to the audience. Salmiya Area presented “The Thirunal” reflecting the traditional church procession and typical “perunnal” celebrations of Kerala. Farwaniya area staged "Moria Mala", which was unique with its profound presentation of Abraham’s loyalty and obedience to God. Dances and other cultural items presented by children and adults from Salmiya, Fahaheel, City-Farwania and Abbassia were well received. More than 400 participants took part in the different stage events.

Arts convener Mr. Sebastian Joseph coordinated the cultural programs whereas Mr. Sonimon Mathew coordinated for the Baladeepthi. The Social Welfare Committee under the leadership of Mr. Manoj George was in charge of the buffet dinner and cake distribution to the huge gathering of more than 1500 members.

The raffle draw to select the lucky winners of the day was coordinated by Treasurer Mr. Sebastian Punnakottil, Raffle Committee Convener Mr. Anish Maliyil, and Area Treasures Mr. Jaison Chemmannoor, Mr. Jose P. Varkey, Mr. Wilson V. D. Fourteen and Mr. Thomas Dominic (representing Salmiya Area Treasurer). Fourteen attractive prizes including a laptop (first prize) were distributed to the winners. Mr. Jogy Yogyaveedan and Mrs. Goggi Dinoy were the comperers for the event. The event was concluded with the National Anthem.
